Lauryn Hill gets reprieve on tax sentencing

Spencer Weiner / AP file

By Reuters

Grammy Award-winning singer Lauryn Hill was given a two-week reprieve on her sentencing for federal tax evasion on Monday as a federal judge admonished her defense counsel for failing to come up with most of the tax money promised prior to her scheduled hearing.?

Hill, a solo artist and a member of the Fugees rap trio, pleaded guilty in June 2012 to failure to file federal tax returns from 2005-2007, when she earned $1.8 million. She faces up to a year in prison for each charge.

Lawyers for Hill, who burst to stardom with her 1998 album the "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill," said they made a $50,000 payment toward the back taxes and penalties, but still need to come up with another $504,000 no later than May 3.

They had expected Hill to raise money from signing a new recording contract by the fall of 2012, but Hill was unable to complete the recording sessions. She has not released an album since 2001.

Hill, a mother of six children, including five with Rohan Marley, the son of reggae legend Bob Marley, claimed she failed to pay the taxes while she was sheltering her family to get away from excessive publicity and threats.

Attorney Nathan Hochman, representing Hill, said the singer had lined up a deal with a "hard money lender" for a loan that was secured by two real estate assets, and that she was expecting final approval of the loan sometime this week.

"For Miss Hill, the only question was when she was going to pay those taxes, not if," Hochman told reporters after the hearing.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Madeline Cox Arleo rescheduled the final sentencing hearing until May 6, but warned lawyers for the hip hop star that the court would not allow another slip up.

"This is not someone who stands before the court penniless," Arleo told the court.

Velodyne vTrue

Velodyne is more known for its subwoofers than it is for making headphones, but the Velodyne vTrue takes the company's expertise in deep bass in a new direction. Velodyne refers to the $399.00 (direct) vTrue as a pair of "studio headphones," although we found them to be far too leaky to be considered for serious recording applications. In every other regard, they are solid, though, so we'll review them here as simply high-end, powerful headphones. In that regard, they perform quite well?if you love gobs and gobs of boosted bass and crisp, sculpted highs. Audio purists can probably stop reading now, but if you're looking for a powerful, bass-heavy headphone pair, the vTrue is a strong option.

Design
The vTrue headphones are strikingly designed, with an aluminum contour on the earcups and a brown padded leather headband and earpads. Everything from the precision-friendly headband slide adjuster to the deep blue padding over the 50mm drivers inside the earcups feels thoughtfully designed. The vTrue strikes out only on a comfort level?these headphones are bulky, and after a while, you're likely to feel some pressure on your scalp.

The audio cables are detachable, and split to connect to each earcup. One included cable has an inline remote and microphone designed for use with Apple iOS devices and all iPods 3rd-generation and up. Both cables are clothbound in deep blue and measure four feet in length.Velodyne vTrue inline

Call clarity through the inline mic is strong enough that your call partner will understand you, and you'll understand them just fine, but it's not excellent?the mic sounds a bit muffled at times, and we're also dealing with cellular fidelity.

Also included with the vTrue: a ?-inch adapter for larger headphone jacks and a black drawstring carrying pouch.

Performance
On tracks with deep, sub-bass content, like the Knife's "Silent Shout," the vTrue is able to show off a bit. Audiophiles seeking flat, accurate response should look elsewhere, as the vTrue is a bass-boosted powerhouse. At maximum volume, the vTrue sounds as if it is just about to distort, but never really reaches the breaking point?and these headphones get quite loud. At safer, more reasonable listening levels, the bass response is intense and clean.

Luckily, Velodyne has the good sense to add some serious mid-high and high frequency tweaking so the sound signature isn't a muddy, undefined mess. On Bill Callahan's "Drover," the vTrue graces his vocals with a nice treble edge which helps it stand front and center in the mix. This is important, because the boosted bass response arms the constant drumbeat with some serious low-end thunder, making it also stand out quite a bit. Without the sculpted treble, his vocals would get lost and the mix would be too focused on the low-mids and lows.

Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild" benefits from the high frequency sculpting, as well?the kick drum loop has a nice punchy attack, while the sub-bass synth hits that sit beneath the loop in the mix are delivered with some serious throttle. The vocals in this dense mix stand out in the same way Callahan's do on his track?the crisp edge they get from the vTrue helps separate them from the powerful lows and mids.

Classical tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," can sound a tad too tweaked and sculpted. The highs are boosted, which occasionally makes the higher register strings and brass sound a bit too bright, but the lower register strings absorb the added bass response nicely. The large drum hits at the end of track sound a bit too bass-boosted, however?almost as if they are amplified instead occurring naturally in a concert hall.

In other words, these headphones don't offer a flat response in any sense?there's tons of bass, and lots of liberties are taken with the high-mids and highs, as well. The result is something bass lovers will enjoy and purists will probably want to avoid. If you're looking for headphones in the price range with a bit less boosting in the lows, the?Sennheiser Momentum?is a solid option and less bulky, while the TDK ST750 is a powerful pair that focuses more on the high-mids and highs.?If you like big bass, but the vTrue's price tag is too high, the?Denon Urban Raver AH-D320?offers a similar sound signature for a significantly lower price. And if it's a true studio headphone pair you seek, you can spend quite a bit less and still have top quality?Sennheiser's HD 280 Pro?is an excellent flat response option. The Velodyne True offers clean, bold performance with booming low-end, and it comes with two top-notch, detachable cables?if it were less expensive, it would get a higher rating.

Map

A few things before you look at this map and say "So I'm here exactly"

I did my best to shape the map how I have it... I didn't have to add colors/detail but i did anyways... but don't go entirely off that either... If I could I'd much rather scan my hand-drawn map because i prefer those so much better. Alas I do not have a scanner so I did what i could for you guys...

http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd3 ... 1366593431

This is currently the map of the continent of Celnaria... Not perfect but It gives the shape...

As you see North west is Garrom, East of that is "Cleyridia's territory (No longer). Down in the lightest plains is Ahn'veria and the dark area represents the forest of Vidaria.

If you look closely you'll see a badly drawn tree which is where Vidaria stands.. I was too far into it to go back to it ... The area that is kinda divided with the forest should be plains but again - too far to go back and fix it.

Ahn'veria is surrounded mostly by hills and plains as I hope you can see... North among the borders should be mountains...

Garrom is snowy mountains, forest and a small area of a plains... Overall mountains as shown...

To describe the borders

Green = Ahn'Veria
light blue = Vidaria
Red = Garrom
Purple = Alexander
Pink = Uncontrolled Territory

Down on the lower left corner - Is the canyon and the small desert areas...

Anyways sorry If i suck at map making but I hope it was helpful.

Austin's Mayor Lee Leffingwell: Being The 2nd Google Fiber City Will Be An Advantage

fiber-rabbitEarlier today, Google announced that it would bring its gigabit Google Fiber Internet service and Google Fiber TV with about 200 HD channels to Austin, Texas, by the middle of 2014. After the event, Google hosted a phone call with press and analysts to discuss the announcement in more detail. During the call, Austin’s Mayor Lee Leffingwell reiterated that the city reapplied for Fiber after it lost out to Kansas City in the first round. He said that he believes Fiber will be a major driver for the city’s economy in the long run and that Austin will benefit from what Google learned by rolling out Fiber in Kansas City first.?”It’ll be good for everybody involved. It’ll make Austin a much more attractive city for those who want to bring their businesses to Austin.” Leffingwell also stressed that the city did not provide any monetary incentives to get Google to roll out Fiber in Austin. Kevin Lo, Google’s general manager for Fiber, also stressed that Google is doing this as a part of its strategy to make early investments in Internet technologies. Thanks to its efforts in Kansas City and Austin, he also argued, many cities now talk about getting gigabit Internet access to their cities. There is clear customer demand for these gigabit networks, Lo stressed. More than 90 percent of the original Kansas City fiberhoods met their sign-up thresholds. There, Google is ramping up the rollout and is currently working in 40 percent of its fiberhoods already and has finished work in 10 neighborhoods. Fiber In Austin: Similar To What’s Now Available In Kansas City, But Not The Same As for the products that will roll out in Austin, Lo pointed out that Google plans to roll out a service that will be similar to what it is currently offering in Kansas City (including the free offering it makes available in Kansas City), but the exact details and the pricing will likely be somewhat different. So far, Google argues, the company hasn’t done enough engineering work to nail down all the details. What Google is rolling out today is just a starting point, Lo noted. The company’s objective is to roll out as fast as possible, but Google is focused on what “users, entrepreneurs, companies and business will do with a gig,” so it wants to on-board users as fast as possible. Google, Lo said, wants to be

Qatar, Libya give Egypt $5 billion boost amid IMF talks

By Regan Doherty and Paul Taylor

DOHA/CAIRO (Reuters) - Arab allies Qatar and Libya gave cash-strapped Egypt a $5 billion double boost on Wednesday as the Arab world's most populous nation struggles to secure an IMF loan to ease its deepening economic crisis.

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani said after talks with Egyptian Prime Minister Hisham Kandil that Qatar would provide an extra $3 billion on top of some $5 billion the Gulf state has already given Cairo, and would extend gas supplies to Egypt this summer as needed.

He told a joint news conference that Qatar, the biggest financial backer of Egypt's Islamist-led government, "did not ask for anything in return" for its aid.

Hours later, Egypt's state news agency MENA reported that neighboring Libya had signed an agreement to give Cairo a $2 billion five-year interest-free loan "to support the Egyptian economy and the state budget and foreign currency reserves". There was no immediate official confirmation from Libya.

Kandil said in a statement on his Facebook page that Qatar would buy $3 billion worth of Egyptian government bonds. He dismissed media reports that relations with Doha were strained over a series of tax and regulatory issues affecting Qatari banks seeking to acquire assets in Egypt.

The new financial injections will buy Egypt time as it seeks to avert social unrest over fuel shortages and food price increases during a long, hot summer in the run-up to parliamentary elections expected in October.

Before the loans, foreign currency reserves had dwindled to a low of $13.4 billion in March, less than needed to cover three months' imports.

MENA quoted a finance ministry official as saying the Libyan deal would strengthen Egypt's hand with the International Monetary Fund delegation, which has been in Cairo since last week.

But Western diplomats said it was no alternative in the longer run to an IMF deal, which could unlock up to $15 billion in multilateral and bilateral lending, and improve confidence for foreign and domestic investors.

Planning Minister Ashraf al-Araby said Cairo may ask the IMF to increase a previously requested $4.8 billion loan to help cover an increase in its budget deficit.

An IMF would require Egypt to make politically sensitive reforms of costly fuel and food subsidies and raise some taxes.

Araby acknowledged there would be social costs to implementing reforms required by the IMF but if Egypt did not reach a deal with the global lender it would be forced to resort to even stricter austerity measures.

CONFIDENCE

Qatar has already provided $5 billion in loans, grants and deposits since Egypt's Islamist President Mohamed Mursi was elected last June.

The government has already announced power cuts and energy saving measures such as closing Cairo airport's two main runways for four hours every night during the summer.

Cairo must convince the IMF that it is serious about reforms including cuts in fuel and food subsidies and tax increases to curb an unaffordable budget deficit and boost growth.

The government reached an initial deal with the Fund last November and announced sales tax increases on 19 categories of goods as well as a tax on dividends and share gains.

The accord was frozen in early December when Mursi suspended the sales tax increases hours after they were officially published, bending to pressure in the face of protests ignited by political conflict over the extent of his powers.

Araby said that the government was now planning to raise sales tax on only six items - cement, iron, telecommunications, cigarettes, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Qatar was angered by Cairo's decision to impose a 10 percent tax on investment gains from the takeover by Qatar National Bank of local lender National Societe Generale Bank, making QNB effectively overpay.

An Egyptian finance ministry aide said on Monday the government had decided to cancel the tax and would reimburse the revenue already levied to shareholders.

Egypt's financial regulator is still holding up a proposed joint venture between QInvest, majority owned by Qatar Islamic Bank, and EFG Hermes, the Middle East's biggest investment bank, which will expire if not approved by May 3.

The deal, which would place EFG's main operations in a company 60 percent owned by QInvest, is politically sensitive in Egypt because both of EFG's chief executives are on trial with the two sons of ousted President Hosni Mubarak over allegations of illegal share dealings in relation to a 2007 transaction.

Economists said flip-flops on taxation were causing uncertainty among investors. The sales tax increases published in the official gazette in December have yet to be canceled, and it is not clear how the government plans to raise the missing revenue.

"(This) is indeed causing a mess in the market as companies remain legally liable for the new rates, but, practically, the government is not collecting them," Moustafa Bassiouny, an economist at the Signet Institute, told Reuters.

Bassiouny said Araby's latest comments on tax increases showed how government policy was "inconsistent".

Against most analysts' expectations, Egypt's urban consumer inflation eased to 7.6 percent in the 12 months to March, from 8.2 percent in the 12 months to February, statistics agency CAPMAS said on Wednesday.

Analysts said inflation was unlikely to continue to ease, however, given the depreciation of the Egyptian pound and planned subsidy cuts, and was likely to accelerate this year.

Chinese bird flu toll rises to 6

Global Post China killed thousands of birds at Shanghai markets, and shut down all wholesale poultry markets, as the death toll from the H7N9 virus rose to six on April 5th.

Over 20,000 birds were killed at a live bird-trading zone in Shanghai Friday, wrote CNN, including chickens, ducks, geese and pigeons. Every live poultry market in the city will soon be shut.

Vendors complained about killing the birds,?wrote the Wall Street Journal,?although the Shanghai Agricultural Commission announced farmers would be given 50 percent of the market price of the birds in exchange for carrying out the cull.

?In the past usually you would see chickens dying before any infections occurred in humans, but this time we?ve seen that many species of poultry actually have no apparent problems, so that makes it difficult because you lose this natural warning sign,? said infectious disease expert?David Hui to CBC.

The bird flu virus death toll continues to rise, with the 5th death announced on Thursday, and the 6th on Friday. The ages of the victims (some who have recovered)?range from 4 to 83.

A total of 14 have been sickened along China?s Eastern seaboard,?writes CBC,?and it?s suspected the disease is transmitted by live fowl. There?s as yet no evidence that bird flu can spread from person to person.

The US consulate in China reassured citizens both in China and abroad,?notes the WSJ,?and has not called for any travel restrictions.

?At this point the risk for international disease spread is considered low?.?The latest advisory from the World Health Organization as of April 4 is that no travel or trade restrictions with China should be applied based on the current information.?

Apple, Google won't face poaching class action suit, yet

A U.S. judge ruled that a lawsuit alleging a broad conspiracy among Silicon Valley companies not to poach each other's employees cannot proceed as a class action for now, but left the door open for workers to eventually sue as a group.

In a decision released on Friday, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California said the five software engineers suing Apple Inc, Google Inc and five other companies have yet to show enough in common among the proposed class members to allow them to sue together.

But in deciding to give the plaintiffs another chance, the federal judge said she was "keenly aware" new evidence had recently become available that could support class certification.

She also said the nature of the "alleged overarching conspiracy" and desire to litigate it all at once weighed "heavily" in favor of certifying a class, which the plaintiffs' lawyers have said could include tens of thousands of people.

The case has been closely watched in Silicon Valley, and much of it has been built on emails among top executives, including the late Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs and former Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt.

If the plaintiffs win class certification, then they would have more leverage to extract large financial settlements than if they were to sue individually.

Other defendants in the case include Adobe Systems Inc , Intel Corp, Intuit Inc, and Walt Disney Co's Lucasfilm Ltd and Pixar units.

The defendants were accused of violating the Sherman Act and Clayton Act antitrust laws by conspiring to eliminate competition for labor, depriving workers of job mobility and hundreds of millions of dollars of compensation.

These allegations are similar to those raised in a U.S. Department of Justice probe that ended in a 2010 settlement, which forbade several of the defendants from entering an anti-poaching conspiracy, such as through the use of "Do Not Cold Call" lists.

Koh said she wants more evidence that a proposed class does not include large numbers of people who suffered no harm.

She also expressed concern over whether evidence would show that the defendants had "such rigid compensation structures" that would have affected nearly everyone in a class.

But in a signal that certification could be forthcoming, Koh appointed Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein and the Joseph Saveri Law Firm as co-lead counsel for the plaintiffs.

"The court has invited us to provide further answers to certain specific questions, which we are prepared to do," Saveri said in an email. "We are in the process of determining a schedule for doing that as quickly as possible."

Apple spokeswoman Amy Bessette declined to comment. Google spokesman Matt Kallman would not discuss the decision, but said "we have always actively and aggressively recruited top talent."

Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy said the chipmaker opposes certification, and believes the evidence will show its employees "were fairly compensated in a highly competitive market."

Adobe spokeswoman Christie Hui declined to comment. The other companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Among the revelations in the litigation was a 2007 email trail involving Jobs and Schmidt, then an Apple director, over Google's apparent effort to recruit an Apple engineer.

After Jobs emailed Schmidt that he "would be very pleased if your recruiting department would stop doing this," Schmidt forwarded the email to others he urged to "get this stopped."

Koh also cited a January 2007 email from Ed Catmull, then Pixar's president and now president of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, to the head of Disney Studios that suggested a desire to avoid bidding up the price of talent.

"We have avoided wars up in Norther California because all of the companies up here - Pixar,, Dreamworks, and couple of smaller places - have conscientiously avoided raiding each other," he wrote.

All of the defendants are based in California: Adobe in San Jose; Apple in Cupertino; Google and Intuit in Mountain View; Intel in Santa Clara; Lucasfilm in San Francisco; and Pixar in Emeryville. Walt Disney is based in Burbank.

The case is In re: High-Tech Employee Antitrust Litigation, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 11-02509.

Facebook addresses privacy concerns over Facebook Home

Zuckerberg on stage

Facebook answers important user privacy questions. Read them before you install or buy anything.

A lot of folks have serious privacy concerns about Facebook's new Home application. Questions about location gathering, message reading, and the general "safeness" of Facebook tracking what you do on your Android phone. We have our own here as well, and have had plenty of internal discussion.

Facebook doesn't want folks to worry, so they released a privacy FAQ about the new product. It's a short read that everyone who might install the app needs to look at, but here are some highlights:

  • You can use Facebook without using Facebook Home
  • Facebook Home is just another app you install from Google Play. You can uninstall it at any time.
  • Facebook Home collects your Facebook activity, location, Facebook messages, and the apps in your Home app launcher. This data is user-identifiable for 90 days.
  • Facebook can not collect any data outside of the Home app, unless you use the HTC First  -- then it can track what apps generate notifications, but not the content of the notification.

We're not going to judge any of these policies -- that's for you to do. We are going to tell you about them and direct you to the full statement so you can read it and discuss. And you should.

Whenever You Dress Nice, Others Are Nicer For Your Needs

Whenever You Dress Nice, Others Are Nicer For Your Needs

Don?t allow fashion to become an elusive part of your life. There are many trends around you can consider out, even though a number of them might not exactly work, many of them will. The thing about fashion is it?s personal for everybody. This article can help you with some helpful advice and tips that will help you craft your own personal style.

Possessing a great purse can make your outfit look good, but ensure that it compliments any other bag you must carry also. As an example, in the event you possess a briefcase, coordinate your handbag together with your briefcase. Usually do not carry to matching bags, instead use coordinating colors or fabrics.

When you constantly travel for work, stock the wardrobe with anti-wrinkle or easy to look after pieces. You don?t desire to spend your holiday from the hotel room ironing. Immediate and proper hanging of your respective clothing upon your arrival at the hotel ensures much less time spent ironing.

There is no need to undergo plastic surgery to improve the fullness of your respective lips. Choose light colored lip gloss or lipstick by using a glossy shine. Light reflects off of the finish, making your lips appear much fuller. Dark lipstick makes lips appear thinner so steer clear of it.

A great way to make your nails moisturized is to keep your entire body moisturized by drinking the recommended eight glasses of filtered water each day. A lack of hydration will dry up your nail beds and leave you with brittle, cracked cuticles too. This may be the situation particularly in the winter as that is a time as soon as the air lacks moisture and heat. Maintain your nails moisturized with shea butter a couple of times per day. Also, put shea butter on your own hands, or some other heavy cream, and place on cotton gloves while you sleep.

Don?t feel bad about investing in your wardrobe. Once you know you will have the funds to pay it, it is better to purchase many items at the same time.

There are thousands of fashion magazines that will help you to stay in the understand about the fashion world. Magazines are an excellent resource for information and provide a handy place to concentrate on the fashion ideas you are considering.

Get rid of tired clothing by donating those to a needy organization. You will clear up space in your closet and help individuals who are less fortunate also.

You should use nice black jeans by using a dress shirt for the great ?dressed-up? look. Colored jeans are simply a great idea if you are intending for any look which is more casual.

A lot of women often don?t feel that wearing the correct underwear is essential. Undergarments are definitely the base of each ensemble. When your lingerie feels and appearance good, your clothing will likely be easy to wear. Get measured if you aren?t certain of your size.

Solid colors work efficiently when you?re carrying a little extra weight. In case you are a huge person, dark colors perform best since they draw light on the clothes which makes you appear smaller. However, if you are smaller, wearing bright and light clothes gives off a lot larger appearance for the eyes of others.

How you style your hair represents much about yourself. This is the reason you have to have a hairstyle you like well. Women in operation need to have a classic, powerful look. In case you are a mom on-the-run, a wash and wear style can be quite a better choice.

With luck, this article has empowered you with a brand new fashion sense. Tend not to let fashion trends and pressure from peers cause you to feel stressed and unsure of what you must wear. It can be almost like a game. However, should you keep in mind tips here, it will be possible to style your own private style and fashion.

Twitter Is Building A Gateway To The ?Web? Of Mobile Apps

twitter-gatewayTwitter is making a move to become the jumping off point for discovering, browsing and accessing the mobile app ecosystem, the company announced yesterday, in a somewhat understated event only developers were invited to attend. The event, due to its nature, was filled with geekier terminology like "footer tags," "deep linking," and "URL schemes," making summaries of its announcements hard to parse by the everyday Twitter user who isn't as familiar with what some of these things may mean.

New Green Tree Huggers Program for Exclusive E-Books ... - PRLog

?

?

Print Credits, Planned E-Book Titles, and Marketing Platform on a Digital Card

PRLog (Press Release) - Apr. 1, 2013 - VENICE, Fla. -- Several factors combine to revolutionize and facilitate the publishing process for the author today. These include digital publishing of E-Books, development of E-readers, tablets and smartphones, high speed internet transmission, image manipulation software, online PR and advertising, online newsletters, newspapers and magazines, blogging, social media, as well as online financial services.

? ? Most of these factors create conditions where an author can write a novel or a memoir, design a cover, and self-publish it as an E-Book as soon as it ?is ready. He can then immediately promote it using online PR services, and social media such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google Plus and YouTube. All this can be done within hours of publication and free of charge. So who needs an agent, publisher and a waste of time and money to do it the traditional way.

? ? The author and latest technologies are now in charge of the publishing process. Traditional publishers have been attacking the self-publishing print and E-Book products for years. They claim substandard products are the result. But all you have to do is to walk through the aisles of bookstores and book sections in drugstores and supermarkets to find just as many substandard products in print. At least a substandard E-Book saves a lot of trees and energy, because it does not need to be wrapped up in more paper, and sent through the mails or delivered by trucks. Yet they use the same digital publishers that self publishing authors do.

? ? The development of E-Readers is also explosive on a worldwide basis. There are dozens of models on the market from Amazon, Kobo and many other. One German model from txtr is an E-Reader priced at about $ 13, which is powered with just a couple of AA batteries that will last a whole year. There is a global trend to develop E-Readers for the masses. It may not be long before a solar-powered E-Reader comes to market. Ubiquitous tablets and smartphones are another E-Reader solution for E-Books in many cases.

? ? Image manipulation software such as Photoshop or Picasa, provide all the functions required to design a book cover whether for a print book or an E-Title. What's more many are free to use with your internet service, and all you need to keep in mind is the size of the cover image. On E-Readers your cover may be of thumbnail size and black and white. This means it must be designed using proper images, lettering, and colors, to stand out among other covers on a small ?E-Reader screen.

? ?Many press release services offer free versions on the Internet. You can write your story like this one you are reading now. You can also include your E-Book cover you just designed. Moreover you can indicate, where and how, your blog or office can be reached, and how to look at a free sample of your E-Book on Amazon Kindle.

? ? Then of course, you can establish a free account on Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, or YouTube and announce your new E-Book on each, free of charge. Better still, you can include the URL's of ?your free press releases on those accounts, as well as in E-mails to your friends and editors of selected newspapers and book reviewers. In Denver, Obama tries to rally support for gun buyer background checks

By Jeff Mason

DENVER (Reuters) - President Barack Obama sought to rally public support for proposed background checks for all gun buyers, touting new gun control measures enacted in Colorado - the scene of two of the deadliest gun massacres in American history - as "a model of what's possible."

Obama is aiming to revive stalled momentum in Congress for several gun control measures, including universal background checks for gun buyers, that he called for after a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at a Connecticut school in December. The Senate is set to take up gun control next week.

Speaking in a Western state that Obama noted has a strong tradition of gun ownership and hunting, the president said that taking action to reduce gun violence does not have to infringe on Americans' gun rights, enshrined in the Constitution's Second Amendment.

"There doesn't have to be a conflict between protecting our citizens and protecting our Second Amendment rights," Obama told a cheering crowd in Denver.

Democratic Governor John Hickenlooper last month signed into law legislation passed by Colorado legislators to require universal background checks for gun buyers and ban ammunition magazines with more than 15 rounds.

"I've come to Denver today in particular because Colorado is proving a model of what's possible," Obama said, adding that the state has shown that "practical progress" can be made.

Obama met privately with law enforcement and elected officials as well as relatives of victims of two Colorado mass shootings: at a movie theater last year in the Denver suburb of Aurora and at Columbine High School in 1999.

Obama devoted most of his speech at the Denver Police Academy to trying to build the case for expanding the existing background checks to cover all gun buyers. Loopholes in the law have exempted many gun buyers from such checks.

"Now understand, nobody is talking about creating an entirely new system. We are simply talking about plugging holes, sealing a porous system that isn't working as well as it should," Obama said.

"If you want to buy a gun, whether it's from a licensed dealer or a private seller, you should at least have to pass a background check to show you're not a criminal or someone legally prohibited from buying one. And that's just common sense," Obama added.

No major gun legislation has passed the U.S. Congress since 1994, but Obama has made gun control one of his top legislative priorities. Opinion polls show strong support for background checks and other gun control proposals, but gun rights advocates led by the National Rifle Association have lobbied fiercely against any new measures.

'THEATERS OF WAR'

In Denver, Obama mentioned some of his other gun control proposals - reinstating the ban on assault weapons and cracking down on high-capacity ammunition clips - that already appear to have little chance of passing the Democratic-led Senate, let alone the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

"I don't believe that weapons designed for theaters of war have a place in movie theaters. Most Americans agree with that," Obama said.

Obama urged Americans to call their senators and House members to ask where they stand and demand votes on his proposals. "There are already some senators back in Washington floating the idea that they might use obscure procedural stunts to prevent or delay any of these votes on reform," Obama said.

Obama drew applause when he pressed for the assault weapon ban despite its bleak prospects in the Senate. At least 15 of the 55-member Senate Democratic caucus are expected to join all the chamber's 45 Republicans to reject the measure.

Even a bipartisan measure to crack down on gun trafficking may be in trouble, according to congressional aides, because of a possible change being pushed by the NRA to weaken it.

The only provision that appears to have strong bipartisan support is a relatively minor one that would provide schools $40 million a year for 10 years to bolster security. This drew Republican backing only after Democrats slashed the proposed price by more than a half.

Obama met with two representatives of hunters' groups in Colorado. The president said he has received "stacks of letters" from gun owners who want gun violence stopped. Obama urged Americans on both sides of the gun debate to listen to each other and try to be more empathetic.

Obama plans to visit Connecticut next week to continue his push for action on reducing gun violence. Connecticut legislators were expected to vote on Wednesday on proposals to expand a state ban on assault weapons and require registration of high-capacity clips.

The Taliban quickly?claimed responsibility for today?s attack, which also injured at least five Afghans at the police headquarters in the provincial capital, according to the Associated Press. ?In a separate incident today a car bomb blast injured at least 10 British troops?on a patrol base in Helmand Province, according to the Guardian.?

The timing of the violence highlights the major security challenges that remain as the United States attempts to wind down a decade of intensive military presence in the country and hand control to the Afghans.

The attacks came just hours after Secretary Kerry and President Karzai held a rosy news conference in Kabul on the state of US-Afghan relations, which have undergone particular strain in recent weeks after?Karzai accused the US?of working with the Taliban to deliberately keep the country weak.

(For more on the costs of the US war effort, read about the $610 million late fee Washington is currently paying on shipping containers it rented to ship home military equipment.)?

But during his trip, Kerry?was glowing in his appraisal of Karzai, declaring that he and the president were ?on the same page? when it came to Afghan security and reconciliation.

"I am confident the president [Karzai] does not believe the US has any interest except to see the Taliban come to the table to make peace and that we are completely cooperative with the government of Afghanistan with respect to the protection of their efforts and their people," Kerry told reporters.

Monday?s meeting was a pivot from the prickly interaction between Karzai and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Mr. Hagel?s own trip to the country earlier this month. During that visit, Hagel and Karzai abruptly called off a joint press conference after tense closed-door negotiations failed to yield progress on key diplomatic questions, including the transfer of a key US-controlled prison to Afghan hands.

The American military formally ceded control of all but a ?small number? of prisoners in that facility, known as Bagram Prison, to the Afghans during Kerry?s visit Monday.

This marks the formal completion of a transfer of 4,000 Bagram prisoners that began a year ago, but hit several snags over perceived security threats. The US military, however, will continue to hold in its custody around 50 high-level foreign prisoners considered ?enduring security threats,? along with hundreds of Afghans arrested since the initial transfer deal was authorized last March,?reports Russia Today.

Despite its limitations, however, the transfer has potent symbolic value for Afghanistan,?writes The New York Times.

Bagram Prison was the most flagrant symbol of Mr. Karzai?s lack of control. Americans detained several thousand Afghans there, and Mr. Karzai had no power to release them. His effort to wrest the prison from the Americans began in earnest more than year ago, and?nearly succeeded?at least twice, most recently two weeks ago, a day before Mr. Hagel?s first visit.

Each time, American military commanders backed out because of worries that the Afghans might release Taliban prisoners, who would return to the battlefield and endanger American soldiers. This time, despite those concerns, the transfer went forward.

?It?s about a shift that?s going on in how the U.S. is looking at what?s important,? said one American official knowledgeable about detention issues. ?We have to look at the larger picture: What?s the U.S. strategic interest here???

Kerry rounded out his visit Tuesday by?meeting with democracy activists and female entrepreneurs?at the American Embassy in Kabul. There, he traded headers with the captain of the Afghan women?s national soccer team and lauded civic leaders preparing for the 2014 elections, according to the Associated Press.?

"You're engaged in a remarkable effort and the whole world is watching," Kerry said.?
